Series, D. Think Everything’s “Normal?” Then It’s Time To Reconsider And Promote A New Narrative Of Disability. Retrieved from http://organizingchange.org/think-everythings-normal-then-its-time-to-reconsider-and-promote-a-new-narrative-of-disability/
After I read this article I was very intrigued by the many examples that the author came up with to take action in for disabilities in our communities. He had many different scenarios as well that opened my eyes to viewing them differently now. Some of these examples where segregating those who have disabilities from those who are "normal", as well in movies the villain is usually depicted as the one with disabilities while the hero is the one who overcomes these disabilities.
I was interested in the many ways that I as a future teacher can incorporate this into my teaching. The article did not necessarily comment on this, but it gave me an idea. It made me think about many things one being that we should not treat students with disabilities, whether it is the smallest or biggest one, like they are special. We should treat them just like we would treat our other students. We should look at them in the eyes and help them in whatever way we can.
I was very frustrated at the fact that even today in the U.S most places look down on those with disabilities just because they feel that they are not like any of us. I also feel it would be important for television to incorporate a show on their lives and see that they are a part of the community just like any of us. Like the author mentioned this would be very important so that we become more educated on this topic and really see that a disability is not an impediment on that persons life, and that they are just like any of us.
I disagree with the author in some points he made such as that people with disabilities are excluded from the rest of society and are usually placed somewhere where they can be monitored or put to live in a building specifically for people that have disabilities. I think this is not always true because in the apartment building I live there are many individuals who have disabilities and that does not stop them from going to the groceries and buying their essentials.
I agree with the the author when he states that we should not judge those with disabilities as not being able to go as far in an educational career as those who are "normal". but instead we should believe that they have the same chance of having a fulfilling".
Overall I enjoyed reading this article, I feel that it brought out many examples of how we should approach teaching in a classroom where there maybe a student with disabilities as well I liked that the author provided with suggestions of the different actions he feels we should be taking in order to be more aware and not as ignorant of this topic.
