Eisner, E. (1998). The kind of schools we need: Personal essays. Portsmouth NH: Heinemann
After reading this article I was very interested by some of the topics that it mentioned, like the fact that humans are born with brains and they only develop their minds by learning about new subjects such as those which are taught in school. I was interested by this as well because before reading, I did not know this fact about the brain which was very intriguing.
I thought the points which explained how we should teach so that students understand better was an interesting detail. For example when they referred to classes where students talk about culture and history. They explained how students should experience the food and culture of that time period in order for them to really grasp the concept of what they are learning. I feel that this is a good tool to use when teaching because as a student myself I feel that I learned more when I was taught with more visual strategies rather than by just learning out of the textbook. I feel that this is what the article is trying to makes us understand, that by teaching more visually rather than by just making our students learn from the textbook it will help them in understanding the topic or unit.
I also agree with the author when they talk about imagination and how it is a crucial point to our minds and how we learn. I agreed with how they explained that each person has a different imagination which leads them to think differently and usually understand different topics in a different way. For example when they explain how ancient composers had the ability to think differently but because they wrote the material down it was preserved for the future generations to understand their thinking. As well with science and the scientists which conducted many experiments that now serve as a tool to educate students about science.
Overall I found the article very helpful because it gave me an understanding of how students usually learn and that not all of them have the same way of learning. I found that as a future teacher this will help me understand how each student might solve a problem differently from another student, or if a student is struggling with a specific topic I could always try to explain it to them differently or communicate it to them in a way that they will not only understand but learn from it as well.
